Haifa:
29 August - 1 September
Sunday, 29 August: After landing
in Haifa, we took a taxi and checked in to the Haifa Tower Hotel. We were
a bit confused when we arrived, since the bottom floor of the hotel is
an office mini-mall. We followed the signs, and eventually found the lobby,
on the second floor.
Our
corner room was on the 10th floor, with views of the hillsides of Haifa
and the port of Haifa/the Mediterranean.
The hotel was on Herzl Street, in the midst of what seemed to be a working-class,
mostly religious and very heavily Russian area. We walked around the area,
saw lots of Judaica stores, several religious schools, synagogues, etc.
Raya's parents arrived later that evening, exhausted from their side
trip to Rome. We grabbed a quick dinner and went to bed early.
Monday,
30 August: After breakfast in the hotel, we took a taxi
to the Technion. The Technion
is billed as "Israel's MIT," and 75% of Israel's engineers
are educated there!! The campus is fairly modern, with some funky-shaped
buildings. At the visitors' center, we watched two short films about the
history and mission of the Technion, and used their electronic touch-screen
exhibits to learn more. We also used one of their computers to check our
email!
We caught a taxi to the Haifa bus station, and rode a bus two hours to
Sfat -- making many, many stops along the way.

After
returning from Sfat, we had dinner at the hotel. Soon after getting in
bed, we started hearing strange explosion-like noises from outside! We
got up, opened the curtains, and saw a fireworks show over the Port of
Haifa! We still don't know what it was celebrating.
Tuesday, 31 August: We caught
a bus to Beit She'an...

Back
in Haifa, we got delicious falafel and shwarma from a streetside
stand right around the corner from our hotel. We walked up and down the
Nordau Street pedestrian mall, window shopping and people watching.
Wednesday, 1 September: We
took a "special" taxi -- basically a minivan-for-hire -- to
Jerusalem...
