Beit
She'an: 31 August
Tuesday, 31 August: After
two bus rides, we finally arrived in Beit She'an. This is an archaelogical
site where Raya worked for two weeks in the summer of 1992.
Part of the site is the ruins of a Roman city. Decades of excavation
have unearthed the mostly-complete ampitheatre, several column-lined streets,
bath houses, temples, shops, homes, etc.
Also
at the site is a tel. A tel is the mound formed by civilizations
building on top of former civilizations, so that over the centuries, the
tel continues to grow higher and higher. Tel Beit She'an includes evidence
of civilizations dating back four thousand years.
There is still ongoing work at the tel, since they have to dig trenches
through layers and layers of civilizations. (If you've read James Michener's
book The Source, you'll understand what this is!)

We explored the Roman ruins and climbed to the top of the tel, in the
blazing heat. We had a late lunch before heading back to Haifa.
