Sfat: 30 August

Monday, 30 August: Sfat is the highest city in Israel (3000 feet above sea level), and the roads got very windy and very steep as we got closer. It made for a somewhat nauseating ride, but the views were incredible!

Sfat became a center for Jewish learning soon after the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, as rabbis and other intellectuals came here for the revival of kabbalah, Jewish mysticism.

We explored the hilly streets of Sfat, and ate lunch at Pinati. This restaurant inexplicably featured LOTS and LOTS of photos/memorabilia of the King, Elvis Presley, all over the walls.

After lunch, we continued exploring. We visited Ha'ari Synagogue, known for its carved, painted olive wood holy Ark.

We visited an artist's gallery/shop and purchased some of his mystical prints. We continued through an old Jewish neighborhood, and stopped at a scribe's workshop, where the old, white-bearded man was busily writing a mezuzah scroll. He turned out to be a former cattleman from Denver!
