Masada:
5 September
Sunday, 5 September: The drive
to Masada was really pretty, passing through the Judean Desert. As we
descended, we passed signs telling us when we were at sea level, and then
how much below sea level we were.
At Masada, our first stop was a trip into the gift shop for cold, fresh-squeezed
orange juice and Ahava beauty products, made from Dead Sea mud.
We
then took the three-minute cable car ride up to the top of Masada. Masada
was originally a Roman fortress, built by King Herod, and was later used
by Jewish zealots who fled to the remote site after the revolt against
Rome in 66 CE. When defeat was imminent, over a thousand men, women and
children committed suicide at the fortress rather than submit to Roman
slavery. Today, this site is where Israeli Defence Force soldiers are
sworn in, avowing that "Masada shall not fall again!"
Our
guide led us through the remnants of Herod's palace on the side of the
cliff, ruins of the cisterns, a synagogue and bath houses.
