Ein Gedi: 5 September

Sunday, 5 September: From Masada, our tour bus took us to Ein Gedi Spa, where we ate lunch and then headed out to the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on Earth (4000 feet below sea level!). To get down to the water, we took the "beach train," which was a tractor-pulled tram.

Eric and Raya went in to the water first, with Alan and Bootsie taking pictures and guarding our stuff. It's so amazing how easy it is to float in the Dead Sea! Even Eric, who usually cannot float in any body of water, bobbed along effortlessly. We didn't stay in too long because the extremely high salt concentration -- 20 times that of the oceans! -- is not good for you for long periods of time. Also, the water was bathtub-warm.

We got out of the water, feeling oily and grimy, and let Alan and Bootsie take their turn.

We took the beach train halfway back to the Spa, stopping where they had big tubs of Dead Sea mud. Raya, Bootsie, and especially Alan (!) rubbed the mud on their skin, soaking in the nutrient minerals. (Eric passed on this experience, and took photos!)

After rinsing off, we took the train the rest of the way back and swam in the freshwater swimming pool until we had to drag ourselves away to get ready to go back to the bus.
